How To Detox Your Skin & Why It’s Important
While detox is primarily known as a diet method to lose weight, you should also detox for your skin’s health.
Is your skin irritated, rough, dull, or excessively oily? Are your pores noticeably larger than normal? Do you have dark circles and bags under your eyes? Perhaps you’re experiencing unexplained breakouts that don’t go away quickly? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it might be time to book your skin into detox rehab!
As you probably already know, the liver is a superhero organ, removing toxins from the body. But, just like all superheroes, the liver has its kryptonite. When the body is overloaded with toxins, the liver can’t keep up. In desperation, it calls on the rest of the troop – getting other organs to help flush out these toxins – really, detox is a whole body job!
Your skin is your body’s largest organ. It plays an important role in the elimination of toxins and can assist the kidneys in their work. It evacuates the waste products that are classified as crystals. These are soluble in liquids and are evacuated in the form of sweat through the sweat glands. When the skin can’t cope with the level of toxins and free radicals, it has a mini meltdown! As a result, the skin breaks out in acne, rashes, eczema, dermatographia, and, in some cases, even boils.
Good to know: If your body is high in toxins, your skin will often be the first to fall.
Where Do Toxins Come From?
First the bad news: Toxins can come from lots of different places – from the air we breathe, to the food we eat, to the lifestyle choices we make. Toxins can even come from skin and beauty products that contain parabens, formaldehyde, and phenoxyethanol. As these products are absorbed, toxins are given the green light to enter the body.
Now for the good news: There are ways you can prevent toxic build up, and remove the toxins that cause skin damage. Read on to find out how…
Good to know: Detoxifying your skin implies letting go of the bad, so you can make room to let in the good – and that includes closing the door on toxins.
Diagnosing Toxic Overload in your skin
Diagnosing toxic overload when it comes to your skin is often a case of tallying symptoms and shining a spotlight on your skincare habits and lifestyle. If your complexion is looking worse for wear, take that as a sign that your skin is asking you for help.
Do I Really Need To Detox My Skin?
Are you wondering whether you really need to detox your skin? If so, take inventory of what health your skin is in. Ask yourself the following:
- What does my daily skincare ritual look like?
- Are there any skin issues I’m ignoring or not correctly addressing?
- What is one lousy skin habit that I feel ready to break?
- What’s the biggest skin mistake I’ve made so far, and what did I learn from it?
- What do I want my skin to look and feel like five years from now?
- What obstacles are in my way of achieving this goal?
- Am I doing all I can to protect my skin from potential environmental toxins, such as pollution and UV rays?
- Am I guilty of excessive cleansing and exfoliation?
- Are some of the products I’m using doing more harm than good, irritating my skin and leaving it dry and red?
As you go through these questions, consider any roadblocks keeping your skin from being where you want to be.
Ready To Detox Your Skin?
If you’re following a good skincare regime, then a ‘facial detox’ is the cherry on top. A basic routine involves products such as a cleanser, toner, and moisturiser with an SPF of at least 30. Make sure you’re cleansing and moisturising your skin twice a day – morning, and before bedtime. Once you’ve established a skincare regime, you can add products designed for your skin type and needs, such as natural eye serum, face serum, and mineral face mask powder.
A Word On Skin Detoxing & Exfoliation
Exfoliation can assist to detox your skin. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the face or body. This tends to happen naturally every 28 days, but factors like ageing and oiliness can slow the process. A build-up of dead skin cells can reduce the effectiveness of any skincare products you use, lead to breakouts, and even dull your entire complexion.
A word to the wise – don’t overdo exfoliation. You can exfoliate your skin weekly with our gentle natural mineral face mask – let the mask dry on your face for about 10 minutes, then dampen and massage gently in smooth round strokes. This achieves a gentle exfoliation and detox without irritating the skin.
Good to know: Exfoliation has to be done right to benefit the skin rather than damage it. Remember to exfoliate gently and not overdo it to avoid a red, raw look. For more on how to safely exfoliate, take a look at this video here.
